Crime in Slovenia in 2011

Abstract

This article presents data on crime dealt with by the Slovenian police, as well as the changes and factors that have affected their work. In 2011, the police dealt with 0.9% fewer criminal offences than in the previous year. The proportion of crimes detected through their own activities decreased by 1.6 percentage points, and the proportion of solved criminal offences also decreased, but by 2.5 percentage points. According to a police assessment, perpetrators caused losses of 271.8 (577.3) million euro through their crimes, and, in terms of economic crime alone, a loss of 176.3 (505.4) million euro. The police dealt with 2.4% fewer criminal offences related to economic crime. The number of economic crimes as a percentage of all types of crime fell from 14.6% to 14.4%. The number of criminal offences related to general crime decreased by 0.6%, and the share of crimes solved by the police was 41.5% (44.1%). The percentage of juvenile crime dropped 6.7%. There was a 9.7% fall in the amount of organised crime dealt with by the police.

An eleven-year comparison indicates an 18.6% rise in the number of criminal offences during the period 2001-2011, while the share of cleared criminal offences rose by 2 percentage points. The number of so-called classical crimes and economic crimes increased, while the proportion of juvenile crime and organised crime fell. The number of crimes against property as a percentage of all crimes fell from 71.5 to 62.1%, while the proportion of economic crime has grown in the last eleven years from 9.7 to 14.4%.
